I am a Counselling Psychologist working in the Rivonia area in Johannesburg. I am also a registered Research Psychologist. Although I have been trained in different approaches I specialise mostly in Cognitive Behaviour Therapy (CBT).
I favour this approach as it is evidence-based, meaning that research has shown that the approach works for a broad base of problems of varying severity. However, I do have experience in other therapeutic approaches and therefore tailor the therapy model to each client’s unique needs.
Another reason for my preference for Cognitive Behaviour Therapy is that various techniques are taught to the client enabling them to take skills with them and this reduces the likelihood of relapse.
In short, I have found that a Cognitive Behaviour Therapy approach has helped many people looking for assistance in dealing with the stresses, strains and difficulties that are part of our lives. Furthermore, I find this approach is compatible with my personal beliefs and values that are Christian in orientation.
I am registered with the Health Professionals Counsel of South Africa (HPCSA) and the Board of Health Care Funders (BHF). This means that you can claim back from your medical aid for services rendered to you as I have the relevant practice numbers.
I am currently working towards my Doctorate in Psychology which focuses on child and adolescent behavioural problems applying a Rational Emotive Behaviour Therapy (closely related to CBT) approach to the child and family system.
I have worked in private practice since 2009, I also worked for a number of years as a volunteer for Hospice, Parent and Child, and Martindale Counselling Centre, all of which has given me a broad base of experience.
I have worked for a number of years at the University of Pretoria training therapists on the professional Masters Programme in Counselling Psychology. I trained the students in research and ethics and the therapeutic model of Cognitive Behaviour Therapy.
As a practicing Christian I have been involved in the Cognitive Behaviour Therapy training of lay counsellors in a church context. I have also compiled and delivered workshops on ethics to both PsyCad and the Vista Clinic. I have supervised a number of masters dissertations with both quantitative and qualitative research methodologies in which I drew on both my therapeutic and research backgrounds.
